History
History
The Irymple Basketball Association (IBA) began in the 1980s, created to provide a local competition for the children of the Irymple area on indoor courts. Initially starting with junior competitions, the association later expanded to include senior divisions.
Originally based at the Irymple Community Centre—where there was just one court—IBA operated from this location until around 2003/2004. As the association grew, competitions moved to larger venues such as the Bendigo Bank/St Joseph’s Stadium and the Mildura Basketball Stadium. Over the years, other locations such as Mildura Senior College and now Chaffey College have also hosted competitions.
IBA was officially incorporated in 1998, with its Australian Business Number (ABN) becoming effective from November 1, 1999.
Key figures in the founding of the association include Val Busch, Marlene Pavilach, Bruce Lowe, and Beryl Westcombe.
From modest beginnings with just four teams, IBA has evolved into a vibrant community basketball association. Today, it supports three senior competitions: men’s, women’s, and mixed. The mixed social competition remains stable, while the men’s and women’s competitions face some challenges.
One of the cornerstones of IBA's success has been its Miniball program, which attracts over 100 children each year. This program serves as a stepping stone for young players to develop basic skills and game experience—many of whom go on to join clubs or become referees.
In the early 1980s, IBA initiated a June Junior Tournament, which it ran successfully for many years before handing it over to the Mildura Basketball Association in the early 2000s.

Graeme Borrie has been on the committee since 1988 and continues to serve as our Competition Coordinator. His leadership and deep understanding of the game have been instrumental in the association’s sustained growth.
The Irymple Basketball Association (IBA) remains committed to delivering a fun, relaxed, and inclusive basketball environment, distinctly different from the more competitive club scene.
Our Mixed Social Competition continues to run steadily, offering a welcoming atmosphere for players of all skill levels who simply want to enjoy the game.
The standout feature of IBA is our Miniball Program, which plays a crucial role in the local basketball pathway. Each year, over 100 children participate, developing essential skills and gaining valuable game experience. The program also serves as an important training ground for new referees.
IBA works closely with the Mildura Basketball Association, helping to foster and develop future players for club-level basketball. Many of our participants go on to join clubs—and we’re always happy to welcome them back to IBA when they’re ready for some social fun on the court again.
Below is a historical record of committee members over the years, recognizing those who have contributed their time and efforts to the growth of IBA.
