Our Humble Beginnings

The association started in the 1980s.    The association was incorporated in 1998 and an ABN effective 1/11/99.

The association started at Irymple Community Centre where there was only one court.  It continued there until around 2003/2004.  The competition then moved to the Bendigo Bank/St Josephs Stadium and Mildura Basketball Stadium.  In between competitions were also held at Mildura Senior College and now the competition is being run at Chaffey college and the Mildura Basketball Stadium.

The main people involved in starting the association were Val Busch, Marlene Pavilach, Bruce Lowe and Beryl Westcombe.  

The association started for the children of the Irymple area on indoor courts.  It started with Juniors and then seniors.

Our History

The association has evolved over the years.  From about 4 teams to 3 competitions in the seniors, womens, mens and mixed.  IBA has also a strong miniball program with over 100 kids attending the program each year.

IBA started a June Junior Tournament in early 1980s and ran it successfully for numerous years before handing it over to Mildura Basketball Association about 20 years later.

Graeme Borrie has been on the committee since 1988, he is currently the longest serving committee member.

Our current situation

Minball competition is strong.  Womens and Mens competitions struggle.  Mixed Social competition is stable.  The Irymple Basketball Association provides a competition which is more relaxed, away from the clubs.   Alcheringa club is associated with the association. Irymple basketball Association’s idea is to put the fun back into basketball in a relaxed social atmosphere.    The association through Miniball provides a starting point for children to learn skills and have some game time with the hope that they will continue into clubs.  Miniball is also a start up for many of our referees.  Graeme Borrie our competition coordinator is a wealth of knowledge.  He has kept our competition going and has increased the strength of our competition.
